Mud Masking For Every Skin Type

So I have mentioned a couple times that we brought on our first contributor to the site!!! Her name is Amy and she knows everything there is to know about beauty. She knows all the best of the best so I knew I wanted her to be the first! This post she wrote and hope you guys love! We decided to do the first one on mud masks since we were at the Blue Lagoon and because I love a good mud mask. So enjoy!!! xo

I love facial masking. So much so, that I make a full ritual of it! It usually involves a double facial cleanse, a light exfoliation, followed by a moisturizing or tightening mask, which is then followed by an evening soak in the tub (candles lit, always), or a Netflix binge (popcorn and peanut M&M’s in hand). Ritual, guys. I adore this ritual. I love the delivery system of masks! Your favorite active skin ingredients being able to sit on your skin and absorbing deeply over the course of your masking session. I love cream masks, exfoliating masks, under-eye collagen masks, lip plumping masks, K-beauty sheet masks — but one mask I have always avoided was a mud mask. My already dry skin craves moisture in the biggest way and I just assumed all that drying mud and clay would only worsen the issue. Wrong, Sis. Wrong.

Because here’s the thing, mud masks usually contain some type of clay in them. Which seems like it would dry you out, though, that isn’t the case. These natural ingredients have properties in them that aid in tightening the skin, drawing impurities and oils out of those enlarged pores (which we all worry about), and they give the skin a nice detox. Even dry skin needs pore-tightening. Dry skin can also always benefit from a little detoxing and toning, amiright? But remember that if your skin is dehydrated, take your mud mask off during the “almost dry” phase, not the last phase when the mask cracks and flakes — that drying phase can be too much for already dehydrated skin. Then follow your mud mask with a toner and a heavy moisturizing cream — the tightening feeling that follows a mud mask can be uncomfortable for dry skin.

But what about you ladies who have oily or combination skin? You’ll be pleased to know that mud masking is perfect for you! Because when used regularly, a mud mask can aid in the control of your natural oil production. Which means you can say “goodbye” to that oily T-Zone! But lets say you also say you also struggle with acne-prone skin. A mud mask will also draw impurities out of the skin. This means the dirt, grime, bad oils, imbedded makeup and pollution will be drawn out of your skin to the surface level—where you can more easily wash them away. If you struggle with deeper acne, use a mud mask more often (think every other day) because the clay will draw out those impurities from even deeper layers of skin, which prevents blemishes from forming at all.

An added bonus is that the clay in these masks (usually bentonite, kaolin, white, rose, etc.) are all natural exfoliators and known to remove toxins, heavy metals, chemicals and dead skin cells. The sloughing off of dead cells that happen during mud masking will leave your skin looking fresh, smooth and radiant! Hello, Glowy Skin! I can jump on the mud mask train! What’s not to love?

So here lay our favorite mud masks. Make sure to pick a mask suitable for your skin type. Because saying all mud masks are the same, is like saying every moisturizer is the same. Not true — Each of these is a beautiful treatment. And each is suited for a different skin type.

1. Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Skin Clay Mask: A water-based product that is more hydrating than it is drying. Amazing for dehydrated skin, since it’s less drying than a clay based mask.

2.Glamglow Gravity Mud: This cult-favorite lives up to its hype. It packs a powerful punch for being an anti-aging, skin smoothing and tightening treatment.Aztec Secret

3. Aztec Secret Healing Clay: This internet sensation has been a long-time favorite! Preferred by acne-prone faces because of the clay’s ability to draw out impurities. It also speeds up the healing process of active breakouts.

4.Dr. Jart Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay Trio: A multitasking kit for those that struggle with redness, dehydration and the occasional acne spot treatment.

5. Fresh Umbrian Clay Mattifying Face Exfoliant: Great option for those struggling with oily skin. It mattifyies without drying your face. Refines skin texture, while absorbing excess oil.

XO Amy
