I started my Kybella journey this spring with cautious optimism. If there was a way to ward of my genetically inclined double chin, I was going to try it. The before/after pics on the Kybella site were bananas—dramatic but natural with no Real Housewives-esque side effects. “You’re the perfect candidate,” said derm Bailey Lee. “No amount of diet or exercise is going to get rid of that fat pad under your chin, and your skin is still elastic enough to respond to treatment.”
For the first time in my life I was proud of my little fat pad.
BEFORE KYBELLA:
We did a total of three Kybella treatments but used fewer vials/injections to minimize swelling. For context: the average patient requires 3 vials whereas Dr. Bailey only used 2 vials on me each time. So my results are more typical of two treatments.
AFTER KYBELLA:
This is after two treatments or four vials. We forgot to take them after the first round but this is similar to what you could expect. I’m red from icing up for my third session. We could’ve definitely stopped here, but Dr. Bailey thought she could achieve an even more defined jawline with a third round. And she was right!
AFTER KYBELLA #3:
You can see that any remaining fat is gone! The results are subtle each time (which is a good thing for those of us afraid of change . . .) but collectively the final before/after is dramatic. You can really see it at this angle too—the money shot!
WHAT TO EXPECT
A lot of you have asked about the recovery and it’s really no big deal. I looked like a bullfrog for a few days but icing your chin and neck regularly really helps, as do scarves and turtlenecks! The swelling is no longer noticeable after a week but you won’t appreciate the full effect for a month. The only pain you’ll experience is during the treatment itself, and it lasts about 10 minutes. Totally bearable. As for how long results will last, Kybella permantely destroys the targeted fat cells. Age and time will take their course, and I’ll undoubtedly have to tackle sagging skin at some point, but as long as you don’t put on weight, consider that double chin gone for good!
COST
Cost varies by patient but an average for two treatments is $2,400. Again, this assumes more vials than I used.
