My Experience With Botox

Today’s post is about BOTOX. Which I know people are either a yes or no on.. so I get that I will have negative feedback for this post! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I am fine with everyone sharing opinions in the comments just please be polite 🙂 also just want to say that with this post my hope isn’t to encourage people to get Botox but maybe just educate people who were curious so that when they do get it, they know what to ask for or how to do it right.

Okay so my reason for wanting to write this is…. no one talks about Botox yet SO many people get it. Most people you follow on instagram who have it, you would never know they have it. I think most people just don’t fully understand Botox so they hear someone has it and assume they look like Jennifer Collidge in A Cinderella Story (anyone?? haha.) And let me say this next, BOTOX and FILLERS are two completely different things (will talk about this more below) — so in this specific post I am only talking about Botox – not lip fillers or anything like that. And even more specifically only Botox on the forehead and frown line. I know people get it above their lips or under their eyes.. I have never gotten Botox in those areas so anything I reference in here about my personal experience excludes Botox in those areas. I just wanted to clear that up so people aren’t confused.

K! So I was actually pretty young when I got Botox the first time (and I am not encouraging young girls to get it, just sharing my experience). I was working at a salon in Utah and was engaged to David. I think our wedding was actually in a few weeks or something. Most of the girls who worked at my salon were older than me and every few months they had a girl come in and do all of their Botox. They talked me into it because they told me about all the benefits etc and promised I wouldn’t look any different. I was TERRIFIED because 1. my wedding was soon 2. if I DID look different my mom would killlllll me. So I got it and sure enough I didn’t think I looked any different. My mom came to town the next week and I wanted to wait to see if she would notice, but she didn’t. Finally I asked her “notice anything different?” she studied my face forever and finally said no.. when I told her I got Botox and I am pretty sure she rolled her eyes haha. My point in bringing this up is just that – Botox has SUCH a negative stigma. I think maybe because in our generation growing up we remember much much older women having that in addition to too many fillers. And like I said, fillers and botox are soooo different. (example: what you notice in Kylie Jenner is her fillers, not botox.)

I didn’t get Botox again for a long while after – just because it is fairly expensive. I mostly wanted to just try it that one time. It lasts 3 months so I had it for 3 months and it slowly wore off. I think I had gotten maybe one more time before I was pregnant but then I got pregnant – then was nursing – then got pregnant while nursing – was pregnant – then nursing – so for almost 3 years I wasn’t even allowed to get it (you obviously can’t get Botox while pregnant or nursing). After I was done nursing Rosie I got it again. I don’t go every 3 months, it is usually every 5-6 or so months so I think I have gotten it 2 or 3 times since I stopped. The thing I love about Botox is that it does smooth your forehead a bit – subtle but just decreases and smooths any wrinkles you did have forming. On top of that it helps prevent future wrinkles from forming.

SOOO many girls who you know or follow have it – but it is this taboo thing to talk about when it is really not that big of a deal. So I would love if this did spark some conversation or just made people more open about their experiences with it. I don’t think it is something anyone should be trying to hide because again, is something that we are all doing to take care of our skin.

When I moved to Arizona I did tons of research to find who I wanted to go to for Botox and my skin. I was referred to Ashley (for Botox) and Rachel (facials and treatments) by about a dozen people. When I pick someone I want them to be my person so they really know my skin and what and how I like it. When I met them I was obsessed because they know their stuff and both are very big on SKIN first MAKEUP second. Working with your skin to make it as radiant and smooth as it can be so you don’t feel the need to wear or coverup with makeup. And I do wear much less make up since working with them. I think it is super important to take good care of your skin and I look at Botox as taking care of my skin – not trying to look different. I wanted to do a Q&A with Ashley who does my Botox here in Arizona because she knows more than I do. I had her answer the questions I had when I first got it and she can hopefully help clear up any misconceptions or concerns!

*All answers answered by Ashley!

Q: What is an appropriate age for girls to get Botox?

A: The 20s are a great age to start treating with Botox, especially for people who show signs of lines at rest, wrinkles or makeup settling in their creases. Starting Botox before wrinkles start forming can limit their development. Prevention is key!

Q: For someone getting it done their first time, what should they ask for? Anything specific?

A: Express to your injector what your goal is: slight softening or completely relaxed? I always tell my first-timeBotox patients that more is not necessarily better. We can always add more, we can’t take away once it’s injected. You’ll learn over time what you love!

Q: How often do you need to get Botox?

A: Usually about every 3-4 months for most people. This may be less for people with a high metabolism or those who are super active and may last longer for others.

Q: What is the difference between fillers and Botox?

A: Fillers are used to FILL in creases and lines, plump and add volume to lips, lift the cheeks to lessen lines around the mouth and contour the face for a more youthful appearance. Botox is used to RELAX muscles to soften the appearance of wrinkles.

Q: What are benefits of Botox?

A: Botox injections relax the facial muscles, which results in smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. My patients often tell me they love how they feel like they look happier and less angry!

Q: What are some do’s and don’ts?

A: Do: Start early! Do: Be open about your Botox experience with others! Don’t: Wait until your wrinkles have set in. Don’t: Get Botox sooner than 2 weeks before an important event so that the Botox has time to fully kick in! Don’t: Lay down for 4 hours after Botox injections or workout for 24 hours after Botox injections.

Q: Will I look different?

A: When treating wrinkles, Botox should give you a more youthful look, but should not make you look like a different person. However, Botox can be injected in certain areas to intentionally change the shape of the face, like slimming the jawline, reducing a gummy smile and slightly lifting the brows.

Q: How much is Botox?

A: Botox pricing varies depending on location, but can range from $10 to $20 per unit. Look for an experienced injector who specializes in cosmetic dermatology or plastic surgery. Good Botox isn’t cheap and cheap Botox isn’t good. You’ll end up paying one way or the other!

Hopefully this was helpful!!! Is there any other questions you guys have? If you have any more I will send them to Ashley and I will add them to this post.

Have the best weekend!!!!!
