How To Apply Deodorant for The Best Results

Using a deodorant to keep dry and fresh is an essential part of your daily routine and how to use that stick, roller or spray will seem like second nature. But did you know that there is actually a right and wrong way to apply your deo?

One sure way to know if you have failed the deodorant application test is if you start to smell less than fresh sooner than you’d expect. But if you do fail the sniff test, don’t worry, as we’ve put together all you need to know about getting the most from your deodorant.

Here’s how to apply deodorant for the best results.

What Deodorant Does

While they may occupy the same shelf space in the drugstore, deodorants and antiperspirants are quite not the same thing.

Antiperspirants work to stem perspiration by blocking your sweat glands, so you remain fresh and damp-patch free. Deodorants, on the other hand, work to deodorize by combatting the bacteria that can cause those unwanted body odors when they mix with your sweat. But they don’t stop you sweating.

So, when choosing between deodorants and anti-perspirants, you need to take your specific sweating or odor priority into consideration. Fortunately for those of us who would rather tackle both, you can also get deodorants which also have anti-perspirant properties. And if you don’t like to have an added scent, or you have sensitive skin, you can opt for scentless and all-natural formulas.

When applying deodorant, there are some slight differences in how you do it correctly, depending on whether it is straight deo, or includes anti-perspirants.

The Best Way To Apply Deodorant

When it comes to how to put on deodorant, you just flip off the lid, wipe (or spray) across your armpit area and you’re good to go, right? Well, not quite, especially if you want long-lasting freshness with minimal irritation. Here’s the best way to applying deodorant to ensure you get the most effective results:

Have a shower

It is always best to put on deodorant after a shower as this gives enables you to remove all traces of your last deo application (which is especially important if you are using an anti-perspiration deodorant that uses aluminum-based compounds to block the pores).

Cleanse your skin

Your first step is to create the ideal base for your deodorant to work and that means taking a few moments for a thorough clean. A light scrub with a loofah or sponge (or even a gentle body exfoliator) will help to remove any old deo product, dirt, sweat and dead skin cells that could be blocking your pores. Just be careful of the soap or cleanser you use, as if it is too harsh or you have sensitive skin or have just shaved, it could irritate your delicate underarm skin.

Dry your armpits

Once clean, make sure you thoroughly dry the pit area using a soft, clean towel and wait a few minutes to let them air dry. If you are in the bathroom and have just had a shower, a good tip at this stage is to leave the room to prevent perspiration making your underarm area moist again.

Prepare the deodorant

If you are using a spray deodorant, you need to give the cannister a good shake to loosen and mix the contents before applying so you get an even application.

Apply a thin layer

Holding the cannister about 15cm away (or as directed) from your skin, gently apply a thin layer and taking care to avoid your eyes and mouth. Don’t over-spray as it won’t give you any extra protection and a thin layer is all you need. This also applies if you are using a solid or roller deodorant.

Leave to dry

Wait a few moments for the deodorant to dry before putting on your clothes as you want to avoid transferring the wet product to the inner of your clothing, which will eventually lead to staining.

You are now good to go and face the world with day-long fresh confidence.

How Much Product Should I Use?

Sometimes less is more, and this applies to most deodorant products. When it comes to how much deodorant to use, a few seconds spray if it is an aerosol or a couple of swipes of roller or solid deodorant under each arm should be sufficient to last the day. And don’t forget, you can always do a top up if needed.

There are also clear signs you have used too much deodorant in one go, such as sticky underarms after a few minutes or flaky ‘chalk dust’ from the spray left on your clothes.

However, you will need to reapply your deodorant after showering, following a lunchtime session at the gym, for example or if you go for a swim. And a final spray or slick of roller deo will make you feel night-time fresh when you get home.

What is the Best Time to Apply Deodorant?

In general, the optimum time to apply a deodorant is straight after a bath or shower, which is when your skin will be at its most clean and dry. And one of the best times to use your deodorant is in the morning, after your shower which will give you the fresh confidence you need to go about your day.

However, as deodorants work best when you are minimally sweating, there is a growing train of thought that the best time to apply your deo is just after an evening shower and before you go to bed. To apply deodorant at night may sound strange but there is some sense to this advice as your body temperature drops at night and so you will perspire less. While night-time application is more relevant to antiperspirants that needs a clean, dry armpit to enable their sweat duct-blocking ingredients sink in, ready for the morning when you’ll wake dry, clean and fresh, it can also be used for deodorants or antiperspirant deodorant combos.

And as long as you thoroughly dry your armpits before applying the deo, this gives the bacteria and odor-controlling ingredients in your deodorant work at their best.

Another slick of deodorant in the morning if you prefer, should be enough to set you up for the day.

How Many Layers of Deodorant Should I Apply?

While it is important to ensure the deodorant product covers the intended area, including any skin angles, nooks and crannies, it is not necessary to apply layer after layer. And adding a new layer to an old application is not a good thing, as it won’t add more freshness to deo that has probably gone stale. All you need with most deodorants is a couple of swipes to ensure and even coverage, and no more.

Is it Bad to Sleep With Deodorant?

It is during the day we need the odor-busting benefits of a deodorant, so it makes sense to use it during your waking hours. However, most deodorant products are safe to sleep in, although regularly using deodorants at night may eventually irritate the skin, especially if you are prone to sensitivities. And, if you do react to a product, it may be best to switch to another deodorant which has been specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
